Photo-video essay, color, 2’16”
The context-specific photo-video essay was created as part of the course Dreaming Venice – About Time, Space, and Beauty during the COVID-19 pandemic. A key component of the course was a field trip to Venice, which, due to travel restrictions, could not take place. Instead, I searched for locations in Cologne, where I live, that evoked the essence of Venice. In both form and content, this photo-video poem explores the inability to move freely and the tactics of navigating available physical and imaginative spaces despite movement restrictions. At the same time, it engages with the course’s theme by reflecting on the engineered environment and the human desire to conserve beauty, destabilizing conventional notions of aesthetics while exploring the poetics of transience and letting go. The ambiguities within the concept are emphasized through the medium—a video composed of still images and fragments of thoughts, unfolding in a rhythmic flow.
