“Next Level: Shelter” calls for a rethinking of the phenomenology of dwelling. The motif of the treehouse addresses the crises affecting us, encompassing not only the housing crisis but also climate change, global economic imbalances, and conflicts leading to migration and refuge, among others, as largely far-reaching consequences of the neoliberal order oriented towards unlimited growth and profit. In the local context of North Rhine-Westphalia, where ten-year protests in Hambach Forest led to the earlier phase-out of coal in the region, the treehouse also symbolizes resistance imbued with creative visions aimed at transforming the destructive practices of modern society. Can we turn crises into strengths by shifting perspectives and developing new forms of social organization and habitats? Can we establish new foundations for our living spaces based on ‘soft’ qualities, such as cooperation in dialogue with nature, achieving greater resilience and social justice simultaneously?
